World Health Organization Raises Warning Over Severe Scarcity of Obesity Medications

Fewer than one in 10 people that would benefit from GLP-1 drugs including Wegovy can access them, states the World Health Organization as it issues its inaugural recommendations on the therapies.

With more than one billion individuals worldwide now obese, it is calling for broader and more equitable access to this class of drugs.

Per estimates, more than two billion are projected to be obese by 2030 unless action is taken.

"The latest guidelines affirms that excess weight is a chronic disease that can be addressed with holistic and ongoing support," remarked the agency's head Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.

Significant expense, limited production capacity, and distribution challenges are major hurdles to broad access to the treatments that can help people shift significant weight, explains the agency.

Weight-Loss Drug Shortage

Even under the current most favorable case, the manufacturing of GLP-1 therapies might only reach around 100 million people – fewer than 10% of the global need, per the health organization.

The guideline encourages governments and firms to expand access, through approaches like licensing agreements.

Exclusive production rights on semaglutide – the core ingredient of Novo Nordisk's Wegovy – is scheduled to end in a number of nations in 2026.

How Obesity Injections Operate

GLP-1 drugs replicate a natural hormone to reduce digestion speed, reduce hunger and enhance satiety so individuals eat less.

People typically start to lose weight within a few weeks of starting on the regular doses.

Evidence points to people may regain a significant portion within a year of discontinuing the medication, when their normal hunger resume.

Being above a healthy weight raises your likelihood for contracting medical conditions, like diabetes, cardiovascular issues, stroke, and some cancers.

Excess weight impacts individuals in all nations and was associated with over three and a half million deaths worldwide in 2024, per the WHO.
