Together Is Now Streaming, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Romantic Bond.

Consider this a dare for partners in committed relationships who appreciate horror films: Settle in with your significant other and view Together. The independent film success of 2025 just made its streaming debut on Hulu. On the surface, it may seem like conventional physical horror, but beneath Together resides a intense contemplation about how we choose to love each other.

An Introductory Film Exploring Partnership Complexities

Together marks the debut feature-length film for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It stars the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as a couple named Tim and Millie, a pair who are not married that have been together for ten years. United in marriage in reality in 2017, Franco and Brie contribute a unique chemistry to their characters, masterfully depicting both the joys and frustrations of a long-term relationship.

The narrative starts when the couple relocate from the metropolis to the rural area for her career. A somewhat stereotypical story element, sure, but that’s largely where the tropes conclude. Together evolves into as much a psychological exploration of the partnership as it is a body horror flick.

A Paranormal Spark

While walking near their new home, a tempest descends, and the protagonists fall into an hole in the earth. After being trapped overnight there and eventually escaping, a supernatural entity begins influencing the couple. This force creates a paranormal intimacy between them that goes far beyond typical partnership.

The whole movie is a gradually intensifying fright fest, weaving in moments of fever-dream horrors, disturbing (but not excessively graphic) biological grotesqueries, and genuinely funny dialogue (sometimes in the middle of something horrific). The director skillfully blends these components expertly and delivers them in a consistently growing atmosphere of fear.

Layered Performances

A large part of Together is only the performances of its stars, and they masterfully render manifold depths to the partnership at the film's core. Millie’s confidence and sense of connection is waning due to a distance. Her underlying frustration of Tim for his hesitance to chase only his floundering music career inexorably rises.

In contrast, Tim's character senses confinement and cut off by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve relocated rural and removed from his social circle. He dreads the idea of utterly sacrificing his individual identity in Millie. This fear is further exacerbated by the fact he does not operate a vehicle and is dependent on Millie for getting around.

The film's most intelligent aspect is that he refrains from painting either of his characters the obvious villain.

The couple grapple with the sort of issues that arise in any relationship after ten years. Fundamentally, they have affection for one another. They still laugh together, comfort one another, and open up at times. But below this facade, there’s an persistent feeling of questioning about their relationship.

Thematic Depth

While the otherworldly presence in Together symbolize these fears of excessive reliance and giving oneself over to a partner, the metaphor never feels hamfisted or self-important. Instead, these visceral horror elements present a brilliant analogue to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the horror and the drama enhance each other symbiotically.

A Divisive Ending

Together’s conclusion, which won’t be spoiled here, has sparked debate on the story's concluding statement about unhealthy partnerships. It has been said that unattached audience members have understood the narrative as a compelling reason for remaining unattached. Conversely, some couples who were in conflict found that the film ultimately assisted them resolve their issues.

If you are alone or with a partner, your own interpretation could potentially serve as a great barometer of how you view relationships. Will the finale plant a sense of discomfort and fear, or a heartwarming sense of hope? Will you see yourself in Tim or Millie and scream at your TV, or simply glance toward your partner and utter, “We could get through that together”?

Whatever the case may be, Together is an experiment you can undertake right now.

Together is available to watch on Hulu at present.
