Revitalized Medvedev Claims First Championship in 882 Days
Nineteen of Daniil Medvedev's twenty-one titles have been won on hard courts
A resurgent Medvedev won his maiden championship for nearly 30 months with victory over opponent Moutet in the Almaty Open final.
The athlete, a former number one, has endured a challenging season, winning just one match at the Grand Slams and undergoing a setback at the New York tournament.
The player's unpredictability on the tennis tour - and struggles with his service game in specific - led to him dropping out of the elite rankings and eventually splitting with long-time coach Gilles Cervara.
Now training with Thomas Johansson and Goetzke, he has steadily improved in the last few weeks - culminating in a closely contested competitive victory over challenger Corentin Moutet.
This marks Medvedev's maiden trophy following the Italian tournament and maiden on a hard court since that period of 2023.
Success also means the Russian has won twenty-one victories at 21 distinct tournaments.
"It's the first time I am participating in a event with my both daughters at once, so to get a trophy is really nice," stated ranked player Daniil Medvedev.
"This championship is in tribute of my child my daughter, because the maiden victory I won when my child her name was born was for her."
The athlete, the past champion, had been defeated in his previous six championship matches, including in that event previously this season.
Medvedev's defensive strategy and recurring outbursts on the playing surface had caused commentators to doubt if his skill to perform at the elite level was concluded.
Yet the player has altered his approach in the last few weeks, attempting to come to the net and play positively, supported by an better service.
He fought back from a disadvantage in the first set against the difficult Moutet, winning four of the concluding five points to take the lead.
Both players swapped break points in the middle set before Moutet, attempting for his maiden ATP Tour title, took control to create a decider.
Moutet defended 4 early-game chances in a close final set before the Russian secured a break to fifteen to serve for the match.
Appropriately, Medvedev secured victory with a rally at the front of the court, with Moutet unable to control a shot after a lengthy match.
