EU Could Retaliate to ‘Unjustified’ US Travel Restrictions, Official States

The European Union could “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unjustified” travel bans imposed by the US against five European individuals working on fighting online hate and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.

European Leaders Decry US Move as ‘Intimidation’

European leaders including Emmanuel Macron charged the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, following the travel bans targeted figures who have been central to campaigns to enact laws regulating US-based technology firms.

“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to coerce US companies to suppress US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “This government will not stand for these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in criticizing the move.

The bans were enacted this week on a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as several activists fighting false information, from two in Germany and two in the UK.

A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation

The DSA is viewed by US officials as a type of speech restriction, while EU authorities contend the rules are essential to control inflammatory language and disinformation.

This row threatens to become part of a much broader existing cultural and political conflict involving Washington and Europe.
