Around fifty automobiles have been smeared with what appears to be human blood in the Germany's town of Hanau close to Frankfurt, as reported by authorities.

Automobiles, building surfaces and mailboxes were marked, in some cases with prohibited symbols, they announced in a official communication.

Officers state they were notified in the late hours on Wednesday, when a individual observed that a vehicle in the Lamboy district of Hanau had been smeared with a reddish-hued fluid.

The substance had been drawn in the form of a banned symbol, they stated.

Officers then found multiple other smeared automobiles and house walls in the adjacent neighborhood.

These symbols are prohibited in Germany under legislation outlawing the public display of symbols from the Nazi era.

Law enforcement report preliminary tests show the liquid was most likely blood from a person.

"At present there remains no lead as to where it came from; officials are currently not cognizant of any harm in association with the incident," they added.

Municipal representatives stated they were trying "to solve the mystery" and have appealed to the residents for details.

An important representative commented the vandalism left him speechless and needed to be resolved promptly.

"This act strikes at the center of Hanau and revives the trauma of the extremist violent incident in 2020," he stated on online, recalling the killing of nine victims by a gunman targeting people of immigrant origin in 2020.
